Rose Tascher sails from her Martinique plantation to Paris to trade her Creole black magic culture for love and adventure. She arrives exultant to follow her dreams of attending Court with Alexandre, her elegant aristocrat and soldier husband. But Alexandre dashes her hopes and abandons her amid the tumult of the French Revolution.

Through her savoir faire, Rose secures her footing in high society, reveling in handsome men and glitzy balls—until the heads of her friends begin to roll.
After narrowly escaping death in the blood-drenched cells of Les Carmes prison, she reinvents herself as Josephine, a socialite of status and power. Yet her youth is fading, and Josephine must choose between a precarious independence and the love of an awkward suitor. Little does she know, he would become the most powerful man of his century- Napoleon Bonaparte.

BECOMING JOSEPHINE is a novel of one woman’s journey to find eternal love and stability, and ultimately to find herself.

My Opinion:

Josephine is a women who has always inspired attention. I must admit that I knew very little about her life prior to becoming Madame Bonaparte. I was aware of her humble beginnings and of her exceptionally strong drive to better herself but really didn’t know the details. Thanks to the beautifully written Becoming Josephine I now have a far better understanding of this complex woman.

It is not a long book, in fact I devoured it in one sitting finding it nigh on impossible to tear myself away from the story. There is rich historical detail skillfully woven with the writer’s imagination to create a novel about a woman who had to reinvent herself in a very dangerous place and time.

It was fascinating to watch Rose become Josephine as she struggled with the twists and turns that life threw in her way. No matter what roadblock stopped her, she managed to overcome it. Ms. Webb gives her heroine a well deserved turn in the spotlight. Her character is very well developed – she grows and changes and learns from life and the horrors of the life around her. I could have read for another 300 pages…

I like to read historical fiction, and I’ve heard a lot of great things about this book. I just finished a biography of Marie Antoinette, and it would be interesting to read a book about Josephine to compare the two women-their lifestyles, roles, etc.

I’d like to learn more of Josephine’s story than what I can remember from the miniseries NAPOLEON AND JOSEPHINE that starred Jacqueline Bisset (which aired a *long* time ago). Have heard lots of good things about this book so would be excited to give it a read!
