About the Book:
About the Author:
This book juxtaposes the stories of two women who have been abused by men; Danielle who enters into her marriage for all the wrong reasons and her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor.
Danielle is a 29 year old woman living with her father who has just finished law school. Her father feels she should be married so he calls in a matchmaker who introduces her to Jacob – a man her father thinks is perfect. Danielle has her reservations but she doesn’t want to disappoint her father. She marries Jacob but soon comes to regret it – and when he crosses a line she leaves. She moves to California where she confronts her past as a prosecutor with a client who is accusing her husband of rape.
The book covers a very important topic and for the most part it is written well but it did start off somewhat weakly. The dialog between the characters was particularly poor but it got better as the book went on. The characters themselves are, with a few exceptions somewhat one dimensional. Danielle is far more well rounded but Jacob and her father are not. Her grandmother weaves in and out of the story to help her along but I think more could have been made of their similar experiences. There is, certainly some powerful story telling going on about a subject that needs attention but I think the book needs further attention to achieve its full strength.
