About the Book:
About the Author:
I love to cook so I of course love to read food centric novels. This is the first fictional effort from Ms. Reichl, the famed editor in chief of Gourmet magazine. It tells the story of a young woman Billie, who leaves all she knows to pursue a career at a food magazine called Delicious! She suffers from panic attacks and writes mysterious emails to her sister. She also somehow manages to find a perfect New York apartment, get the job and make friends immediately even though she professes to be shy.
The story is a bit rote until it reaches the part where Billie discovers a series of letters written by Lulu to James Beard. Here it does get a little more interesting and the story strays from the familiar. It was a little harder to put the book down during this section of the book. It’s a bit more lively and Lulu feels somehow more real than Billie.
All that being written I did enjoy the book. It was a nice diversion from all of the historical novels I usually read. It was light – for the most part – I really didn’t have to think much while reading it. Sometimes a book like that is just what you need. A simple story, characters who don’t rile up too many emotions and a happy ending.
