I must admit that the chickens are not my favorite farm animals. They are really obnoxious; the roosters are nasty, they are dirty, they peck at the goats and they just don’t care. They’re the hubby’s creatures. I’ll take care of them if he’s not around but other than that I try and ignore them and they ignore me. This works well for them and it works well for me. I do admit that I do like the eggs and free range chicken tastes far superior to the stuff you get in the supermarket.
Every year we get chicks to raise that we butcher in the Fall to put in the freezer. It’s a breed called Red Rangers and they are bird bred for meat. They are not the kind that grow so heavy their little legs break – we don’t believe in that kind of farming. This year’s birds are coming along and it will soon be butchering day. I day I hate if truth be told. It’s a long, hard day and it takes a lot out of both of us.
One of the hens had gotten all tangled up in some baling twine and she could barely walk. I managed to catch her – mind you these birds generally run as far from me as they can so catching her was a challenge even with the twine around her little legs. I got her all untangled and thought nothing more of it.
She had other ideas.
I have acquired a friend. She follows me around now. I go out in the morning to take care of the goats and as soon as I get to the pens she is there. She follows me up to the goat pens, she follows me down.
She even lets me pet her! It’s somewhat shocking! She’ll just stand there and I can pet her just like I pet the cats or the goats. I just find it so amusing. After 8 years of having chickens I now have a chicken pet. Obviously I can’t put her in the freezer. The hubby just shook his head and walked away.
How can I eat the one chicken out of the dozens that have been here that acknowledges my existence? So she will be staying on the farm to lay eggs. I will admit that I am now spoiling her like I spoil the goats. I give her little treats and such.
Oh, and I’ve named her. Please meet Scarlet O’Henna.
