I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Depend. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation. #Underwareness
I find as I get older that certain issues are often brought to the forefront for me to write about on my blog. I find it amusing that once I passed 55 I seem to be in the prime demographic to provide you all with information about bladder leakage. The fact is, though that this is an issue that strikes younger women as well as older women. From what I’ve read pregnancy is often a factor in this problem for women. I’ve never been pregnant and so far I am not having bladder problems but it doesn’t mean I won’t in the future. In fact, I’m as likely as not to have problems due to my ongoing health issues.
I’ve written several times about how my world turned upside down when an aneurysm was found in my brain. I’ve written less often about the additional brain abnormality found at the same time. The doctors also found a rare condition called Chiari Malformation. It’s a progressive brain disorder that manifests in a number of ways. For me it causes balance problems, numbness in my feet and hands and pain in my shoulder. There are a lot of other little issues but these are the main symptoms I deal with on a daily basis. I had a surgery for the condition in 1999 but it really didn’t do much to help. I’ve been somewhat stable lately but it could all go to heck at any given time.
Why do I bring this up now? Because one of the symptoms that can manifest is lack of bladder control. As we all know as we age things start to break down and for me this means a list of the regular things that are normal with aging as well as all of the continuing problems that Chiari Malformation can bring. I have been having increasing problems with my balance – as anyone who sees me walking down my driveway could tell you. I look a bit like I had a six pack of beer for breakfast and trust me – I haven’t had anything to drink for more years than I care to count.
I do have to note that for anyone who deals with bladder issues there is nothing to be embarrassed about – this is an issue that needs to be discussed. Did you know that over 51 MILLION American women experience bladder leakage? That’s 1 in 3 women – with that many having issues it should not be something that should be hidden and stigmatized. To help Depend has created the Silhouette Active Fit Briefs so that women can feel comfortable doing everything they normally do.
I’m glad to know that if my Chiari symptoms get worse I’ll have something that will allow me to keep doing all of the things I like to do like chasing – and being chased by – my goats. I love being outside with them when the weather allows. Montana is such a beautiful state.
I do have a friend that is currently dealing with bladder leakage. Her last pregnancy was a long and difficult. It left her with a beautiful baby boy but several ongoing problems – one of them being not able to hold her bladder as securely as she had prior to having the baby. She was really embarrassed at first but after some long discussions I told her that she was not alone. After I told her about my what could be in my future we laughed and said we could go shopping together for our Silhouette Active Fit Briefs.
It’s a place that certainly lends itself to being outside and enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. I’m just glad that I can do what I want when I feel well and even if my bladder decides to work against me I’ll have Depend to help me still do the things that I love. Depend is in the second year where the company is donating $1 (up to $3Million total) for every photo or video with #Underawareness mentioned. The program will run through 2016 and the money is used to fund research and support for women with bladder leakage.

It’s good to keep people talking about this issue because it isn’t going to go away. No one should be afraid to ask for help if they need it and use products like those from Depend. I’ll be glad they are there if I ever have the need. The active fit briefs are smooth and made of a rather comfortable material. I did try a pair on just to see how they would fit and they were surprisingly comfortable. The box I was sent had 6 in beige and 6 in black so there are options for different fashion styles.
