I will admit that I had heard of poke cakes but had never made one. What can I say – I’m a bundt girl. I thought it would be fun to branch out. The book is full of all kinds of flavor combinations for poke cakes – some familiar some not.
These cakes look pretty easy to make and all start with a box cake mix. Most include a box pudding or jar of something for the “poke” filling. This is where I found and lost my fascination. It was truly interesting to me to see just how many different possibilities the creator came up with for each base cake; chocolate, vanilla, etc. But I don’t use box cakes. I am sure I could transfer the ideas to homemade cakes with ease and I do have a world of ideas that I will probably put into use when I have cake needs in the future.
I’m particularly intrigued by anything chocolate/strawberry, chocolate/coconut or s’mores and the book offers plenty of opportunity to poke your way to cake heaven. There are lots of gorgeous color photos of the various cakes showing the different flavors “poking” into each other. The directions are well laid out and simple to follow.
