Lloyd Lofthouse grew up in Southern California, served in the Vietnam War as a U.S. Marine and lives near San Francisco with his wife and family with a second home in Shanghai, China.
This is really two books in one telling the fictionalized story of the real life Robert Hart. I must admit to not knowing about Mr. Hart before I embarked upon reading this saga but I feel I know him now. In fact this is one of those books that sends you off to research further because the character is so fascinating.
I, like many people find the history of China rather enthralling. The culture is so very different than ours and to read about a people whose history goes back as far as the Chinese just gives me such an education. This book was not a disappointment when it came to immersing the reader in the culture and battle that is East and West especially at the critical point in China’s history that is being portrayed in the tale.
The writing has a rhythm all its own that did take me a bit to get used to but once I did I found myself quite lost in Mr. Hart’s rather conflicted mind. He was a son of Ireland who went to China to find redemption after he spent a little too much time with the ladies. His father was a minister and his behavior was not appreciated by his family. Upon arrival in China he finds himself in a world completely alien to anything he has ever known. A world where women are regularly sold and concubines are common. He tries to fight his erm, urges but he is, after all, a man.
Due to the subject nature of the tale sex plays a big role in the first book. And there is a lot of war so there is violence as well. None of it was overplayed but rather written into the story in appropriate ways. It is a man’s story in a man’s world.
I found myself turning the pages and completely fascinated by this story of a very real man who had such an impact on China at a pivotal point in its history. For anyone interested in a riveting book with compelling characters I would suggest this one.
