It’s a holiday today and even though the hubby will be busy cleaning out his garden and I will be busy canning chicken stock the Farm cats have decided that they deserve a day off.
As if!
Sometimes I wonder at how their little brains work. They go out in the morning and do whatever it is that they do. They come back in and sleep all afternoon and then they go back out for the evening to come back in at bed time to sleep all night. Except for those 2 AM wild hairs they get.
But today they have decided to adopt a “let’s enjoy the last of the nice days” approach to life. Not that Stinky the Farm cat doesn’t really always live that way.
She is an old cat and old cats deserve to sleep in the sun. Any way they see fit. Even if we humans wonder how it can possibly be comfortable.
Harry the Farm cat does spend his day chasing mice and gophers like a good Farm cat should – he’s really the only one who does. (Stinky makes the occasional go at a mouse but she has no teeth so it’s hard for her to really catch them.) So of any of the cats Harry deserves his rest on the deck. He’ll soon be back in the garden digging for gopher.
Pumpkin the Farm cat is a difficult cat to photograph. He is rarely seen and when I pull the camera out he runs. I’ve shown this photo before but it’s one of the few good ones I have of him. He is a cat that likes to hide in dark places, then he comes out to eat and then he’s gone again. I really wonder as to how he was treated before he came here. Because he has been here since 2006 and we have given him as much love as he will accept and yet he still remains aloof. Cats are funny that way.
Sherpa the Farm cat could give a master class on relaxing. He eats, he sleeps. Every once in a while he gets a bout of the crazies and he goes after Harry. But other than that he is one chill cat. He also loves to sit in my lap when I’m trying to type. Nothing like 12lbs of cat sitting on your arm.
I think the Farm cats are very smart to take advantage of the last days of warm weather. I can feel the change to winter coming. It’s been very chilly in the morning lately and with Montana you never know when that first snow will fall. Soon the time for lounging in the sun on the deck will be gone for another year and they will have to wait for the warm breezes of spring to welcome them back to one of their favorite ways to spend the day.
